Q&A

Why are you asking for more money?
Like many schools in Ohio, state funding reductions and necessary cutbacks have impacted education negatively. Our schools have also experienced a surge in enrollment of over 1,000 students with no new tax revenue. Our schools have made $2 million in cuts, but the reality is that with additional cuts, our schools will lose the vital educational programs that our students need for life after graduation.

What will this issue fund?
This issue is critical to maintain what we have now: good teachers, current technology, instructional programs and up-to-date textbooks to prepare our students and preserve our community’s pride and home values. Every dollar of this issue will be used for classroom instruction and programs.

Why can’t the District make more cuts?
The district has made every effort to save, including $2 million in recent cuts; pay freezes are in place for administrators and 40 teachers have been cut. Our schools have not had a tax increase in 12 years and our enrollment has grown tremendously. The schools have remained cost conscious. Unfortunately, a looming 15-20% reduction in our state funds will provide an additional challenge for our schools.

I can’t afford more taxes, why should I support this issue?
The board did everything possible to make this issue affordable for taxpayers. After much consideration, the school board agreed upon a 6.9-mill Emergency operating levy.

I no longer have children in the district; why is this issue important?
This investment is not only essential for our students, but also for our communities. Without this issue, we will lose quality results, jeopardizing our schools, neighborhoods and home values.

How much is this going to cost?
This levy is slated to cost the home owner under $18 per month per $100,000 of home value.

What will the District do to ensure cost savings?
Highland Schools have the lowest cost per student in Medina County and it is 20% below the state average. Highland teacher salaries are average in Medina County. The district has already made moves to cut costs, including cutting 40 teachers and freezing administrator salaries. Even with this levy’s passage, Highland Schools will continue to cut costs.
